Inlays and onlays are a type of dental restoration procedure that help to repair teeth that have suffered moderate damage due to decay or injury. Unlike fillings, which are molded into place within the mouth, inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental laboratory before being fitted and bonded into place by your dentist. Inlays are used when the damage is within the cusps of the tooth, while onlays are used when the damage extends beyond the cusps. Both procedures provide a durable, natural-looking solution to restore your smile.
Inlays and onlays are an excellent choice for those who have teeth that require more than a filling but less than a crown. They provide a highly durable and long-lasting solution that can strengthen your tooth by up to 75%, unlike traditional fillings. They are made from durable, long-lasting materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or even gold, which can last for years. Inlays and onlays also preserve more of your natural tooth structure, which is always beneficial for your long-term oral health.

Inlays and onlays are made from highly durable materials such as porcelain or gold, which can withstand the forces of chewing and biting for many years. This makes them a more long-lasting solution compared to traditional fillings, which may need to be replaced more frequently.
One of the most significant advantages of inlays and onlays is their aesthetic appeal. They can be made to match the color of your natural teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable. This means you can smile with confidence, knowing that your restoration is not noticeable.
Inlays and onlays require less removal of your natural tooth structure compared to other restorative procedures like crowns. This means more of your natural tooth is preserved, which is beneficial for your long-term oral health.
During your first visit, our Milpitas dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your tooth to determine if an inlay or onlay is the best treatment option. If it is, he will remove the decayed or damaged part of your tooth and shape the remaining structure to prepare it for the inlay or onlay.
Once your tooth is prepared, Dr. Wong will take an impression of it. This impression will be sent to a dental laboratory, where your inlay or onlay will be fabricated. In the meantime, a temporary covering will be placed over your tooth to protect it.
When your inlay or onlay is ready, you will return to our practice. Dr. Wong will remove the temporary covering and clean your tooth. He will then fit the inlay or onlay, making sure it fits perfectly and feels comfortable. Once he is satisfied, he will bond it to your tooth using a strong dental adhesive.
